Sherry Miller's Blogging History

I began posting ideas and images in 1992 on Women's Wire with Nancy Rhine Figallo, Pamela Heyda, Kathleen McMahon and others who are also still active online. And there were other BBSs on New Media, Multimedia, Art, etc. My then revolutionary website, Sherryart.com, had columns and sections for other authors and essays organized into categories like Nanotechnology, Maine, Paintings, etc. Around 1997 I began a real blog called Oldest Woman on the Web which I was at the time but certainly am not now. This blog, perhaps seven years old, has a lot of long articles in the Categories on the right.

 I hope you'll stop here often and comment when you can. You'll find new paintings and some thoughts - and my new category Thinking.

 

Henry Ossawa Tanner - African American Artist

Henry Ossawa Tanner is a world-famous "Negro" artist almost unknown in his native America. I'm publishing this story in acknowledgment of Martin Luther King Day, 2010.

 

Why isn't Henry Ossawa Tanner a household name?  He is a major American artist with an international reputation. Is he relatively unknown here because he is an African American?  He has been acclaimed among black leaders including Booker T. Washington, Edward Bannister, and W.E.B. DuBois.  Tanner's solid accomplishments in painting and his illustrious family history, together with their relative exclusion from American arts and letters, make a strong argument for multiculturalism - in this case the inclusion of non-white-male artists in the canons of our books and universities.

St. Basil's Cathedral

 After receiving a commission for another painting of St. Basil's that is 20" x 20" instead of the original which is 36" x 36", I created two new paintings so the client would have a choice. Here are the two new St. Basil's paintings. But now they are both sold!

Yosemite Paintings

My first visit to Yosemite was Spring 1991.  By fall of that year I had packed up my car and moved from Maine to the Bay Area.  I had never seen anything as beautiful as Yosemite.  My son-in-law, Rusty Reno, had already climbed El Capitain seven times and he took care of everything during the three weeks we camped there.  I try to return in all the different seasons.

It's All About Art - in my Sausalito Studio

My studio in Sausalito, California In March 2007 I started a blog while waiting for some children to come home from school in Omaha, Nebraska. Check my archives for those humorous essays. Now I'm going to try and stick to art. I paint every day in my small studio in Sausalito California. Our building used to be a Liberty Ship building site during World War II but for thirty years the ICB Building has been home to about 90 artists. Suddenly we are getting organized and 'going public' with new events, newsletters and more. It's great for location on the Sausalito waterfront and for as much or as little art comraderie as you would like. I hope to chronicle the progress of my paintings.
